At the start of a period where Nebraska was expected to spend big and spend often, things aren't turning out the way Husker fans expected. After an up-and-down first few days of the transfer portal being open, Kenny Minchey slipped through NU's fingers just a day after he committed to Matt Rhule and company. This portal loss is a hammer blow to a program that's already trying to shrug off ending the season with three straight blowout losses.

Minchey reportedly committed to the Cornhuskers on Sunday evening. The lack of a social media post from the quarterback himself should have been a sign. Though in the area of signing big deals for big money, portal flips are rarer than high school commitments by a long shot.

Just over 24 hours later, the former Notre Dame quarterback is switching allegiances. After Several recruiting analysts, including Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong, logged predictions for him to head to Kentucky, he reportedly made it official

What looked like a cornerstone portal win with Kenny Minchey now has Nebraska back on shaky ground.

Reports are that the Wildcats were trying to land former Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt. Still, the ex-Sun Devil started leaning towards LSU late Monday. New head coach Will Stein then pivoted to Minchey and is said to have laid out quite the "bag."

In other words, they are paying the QB much more money than Nebraska was offering. If that's true, questions have to start about the comments the Huskers' AD and head coach made this season.

When Rhule was signed to an extension to keep him from going to Penn State, it was strongly hinted at that the Huskers were going to increase spending to a level that would allow them to "do whatever" they wanted in the portal.

Then a string of transfer portal showdowns ending in losses started to make fans wonder where all the money they were promised was being funneled. Still, the true wave of frustration was held off by Minchey's commitment and fans knowing at least NU got its quarterback for 2025.

Now that Nebraska has to go back to the drawing board and go with their Plan B or Plan C at QB1, things could get very ugly this winter. Certainly, there will be a large portion of the fanbase fed up with giving Rhule and his ever-changing staff and rosters the benefit of the doubt.
