As it turns out, the Nebraska football team is going to have some sort of spring game/ scrimmage on Saturday. Earlier this spring, the Huskers had announced that instead of a spring game, there would be a host of events including a showcasing the volleyball team and a sale of NU memorabilia.

However, plans have changed a bit, according to head coach Matt Rhule who announced there will now be a scrimmage in Memorial Stadium on April 26. However, this still won’t be the kind of spring game that Husker fans are used to seeing. Rather, Rhule billed it as a way for some players to make their case.

The Nebraska football team’s new approach to the spring game will allow players who might be casualties of the new 105-man rosters that will be put in place this fall, to show what they can do. Onlookers will certainly be be Cornhusker coaches but Rhule said it could also serve as a way for players looking for a new school to show what they can do to those new destinations.

Nebraska football has brand new twist on spring game scrimmage

That’s not to say that the scrimmage will be like a preseason game where Rhule will determine who stays and who goes. He wanted to make that clear. This isn’t a tryout game.

However, what he also made clear is that starters and potential starters likely won’t be playing on Saturday. Instead, it will be guys lower on the depth chart looking to show what they can do.

One other important thing to note is that Nebraska football fans who were hoping to get their spring game hit from home are still going to be disappointed. This new scrimmage plan still won’t include anything televised.
