You would think that someone who cried on camera after a win over a cupcake opponent might refrain from badmouthing other coaches. And yet, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore had some rather choice words that were a not-so-veiled shot at Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule regarding spring game plans.
Moore, speaking to On3 about the fact that Michigan still plans to hold a more traditional spring game this year, offered up his reasoning as to why: "I don’t think the spring game is going to make a big difference in whether your guys get poached or not."
Players getting poached was the reason that Rhule gave for why the Nebraska football program canceled its own spring game. Instead, the Huskers will be doing a kind of spring showcase. And in mentioning tampering, he did get some people to doubt that was the reason.
Nebraska football coach takes a stray bullet from Michigan
Moore might have even not meant to take a shot at Rhule. It seems likely that the Husker head coach was used as an example, especially since NU was a bit of a trend setter the last few months, being the first to announce they weren’t going to have a full-on scrimmage.
But it’s still a weird comment to make, slagging a rival head coach over something that Moore also admitted does happen. Other coaches do come in and poach players.
So why should Rhule give those opposing coaches even more opportunity to see how Nebraska football players that might be valuable, look during game action? Other coaches are clearly worried about this sort of thing too. It doesn’t make a ton of sense to pretend they don’t.
Granted we haven’t seen Moore demonstrate he’s got a handle on being a big time head coach yet. So maybe he could just learn a thing or two from his Nebraska football counterpart.
