Nebraska football scores second portal win at position of great need

Never let it be said that Matt Rhule and his Nebraska football staff aren’t proactive. There was some serious problems with special teams snapping this season and now the Huskers have gone out and gotten one of the best long snappers in the country out of the transfer portal.

On Saturday morning, former New Hampshire long snapper Kevin Gallic announced he’d committed to the Cornhuskers. He officially becomes the second portal get for an NU team that is expected to be busier in the portal than it has the last two seasons. Maybe combined.

Gallic follows EDGE Williams Nwaneri who committed just hours after he entered the portal this week from Missouri. Considering the sheer number of defensive players that have departed the Nebraska football team, Nwaneri was a big need. So was Gallic.

Gallic spent the past three seasons at the FCS level and played in 36 total games. In 2024 the 6-foot, 239-pounder played in 13 games and made three tackles. He was named a FCS mid-season first-team All-American by Phil Steele.

The Huskers used two long snappers — Camden Witucki and Aidan Flege — this past season. Both were inconsistent and led to a shaky field goal unit for most of the season. That included a bad snap on a field goal attempt in the Huskers’ last minute loss to Iowa. Had the snap been good, there’s a chance the game would have at least headed to overtime.

While long snapper isn’t a high profile position, the Nebraska football did have competition, including at least one other P4 team. Kevin Gallic picked the Huskers over TCU, Akron and UMass.
