Things move fast in the world of Nebraska football and that includes the program finding some teams to play in place of the now canceled home and home series with the Tennessee Volunteers.

Earlier on Friday, it was announced that the Huskers decided they no longer wanted to play the SEC powerhouse in 2026 and 2027. The announcement of the cancellation sparked quite a few reactions, including Volunteers’ AD Danny White who decided to voice his displeasure on social media almost immediately after the news broke.

While all of this came to light on Friday morning, it’s clear the Nebraska football program has been working on it for a while. Not long after the Tennessee series was officially dropped, AD Troy Dannen announced who would replace the SEC team. In 2026, MAC team Bowling Green will be coming to Lincoln. In 2027, it will be a rematch of this year’s tilt against Northern Iowa.

Nebraska football replaces two games on future schedules

After the announcement of the change to the schedule, Dannen said they had canceled the games because they wanted to have extra home games, especially in 2027 when construction on Memorial Stadium will reduce the seats that are available.

Dannen said the university wanted to have eight home games in order to make up the lost seating revenue. It was important enough to the program that they are also willing to pay Tennessee $1 million total ($500K each game) for backing out of the agreement.

When the Bowling Green Falcons do face off against the Nebraska football program, it will be the first meeting between the two schools in history.
