Nebraska football moving to grass field as part of stadium renovation

The Nebraska football team has been playing on turf for years but that's coming to an end in the near future.

Since Troy Dannen took over the athletic department, he’s put his stamp on a number of programs. And while the Nebraska football program hasn’t been outwardly affected by Dannen’s moves just yet, it’s clear that before too long, he’ll have his signature all over it.

Dannen took over the Memorial Stadium project from his predecesso, and while he originally said he was going to keep things seemingly the same, he’s since changed up some very important aspects of the project. And now it appears part of Dannen’s signature is going to be changing the playing field the Huskers will run and pass and tackle on.

On Friday, according to the Lincoln Journal Star’s Chris Dunker, Dannen told the NU Board of Regents that Memorial Stadium will switch to grass "at some point in time" when the renovation to the stadium gets underway. That change is long overdue and it’s long been one of the top things fans, coaches and players have hoped would take place.

However, Dannen has finally brought that change into reality. Now the big question is just how long the Nebraska football team will have to wait until it’s really a thing.

Nebraska football getting turf in the near future

Dannen had previously talked about changing the field turf but it appears that things are moving ahead quickly. Though it’s worth pointing out he hasn’t actually said when this move is going to happen.

Dannen is undertaking quite a few changes for the Cornhuskers in a short period of time. He joined the school this past spring after Trev Alberts was hired away by Texas A&M just ahead of the NCAA Tournament.

Since being hired on, he’s started to reshape the Nebraska football program’s NIL efforts which had fallen behind a bit under Alberts. Like the Memorial Stadium project, he’s put his touch on the program. Certainly the grass field is one big step that will be quite welcomed.
