Nebraska running back Emmett Johnson has demonstrated over and over that he's one of the best players in the country. The rest of the country is just finally starting to figure that out.
How good he is still might be a surprise even to Husker fans. The running back, who is already having the best season in Lincoln since Ameer Abdullah, could finish with some real historical highs. We're talking historical Heisman highs. Mike Rozier highs.
Johnson is currently the nation's leader in total yardage and is second in the country in rushing. That much can be found out by looking at the current stats. What's noteworthy is that should he continue on that pace, he could be only the second Nebraska player to ever lead the sport in total yards.
Emmett Johnson on the hunt for some big Nebraska football history
Rozier was the first back in 1983 when he had 2,254 total yards. Of course, the former Heisman winner was far more one-sided, only amassing 106 receiving yards. Johnson already has 300 yards receiving to go along with his 1,131 yards on the ground.
For the moment, the Nebraska star has a 70-yard edge on Jacksonville State running back Cam Cook. However, EJ is off this weekend, while Cook will catch up in games played.
There is also the chance that some other players, like Jeremiyah Love and Kewan Lacy, could catch Johnson by going far into the playoffs. Though both players are a ways back.
Emmett Johnson's season is so good that Nebraska is already pushing to make him a bona fide Heisman candidate. If he keeps going at this pace, could he get himself in the record books in the most impressive way possible?
