Nebraska's coaching staff decisions this month have felt like a direction arrived at: "better late than never." The announcement by quarterback Marcos Davila underlines the same approach that is taking place with the quarterback room.
Davila came over to the Huskers almost a year ago to the day from the Purdue Boilermakers. Now he's made it clear he's heading to the transfer portal when it opens on January 2. The announcement means that NU is suddenly very, very light at the position. But it also means the coaches are clearing the decks and making sure from here on out, they have one type of quarterback.
With the expected departures of both Dylan Raiola and Davila, Nebraska is making sure the QBs left behind are mobile. Both Raiola and Davila were known to be more traditional pocket passers. The early scouting reports went so far as to call the former Boilermaker "stationary."

Nebraska football appears to be choosing a quarterback direction at last
That would seem to indicate Davila is even less mobile than Raiola. He's got an arm the Husker coaches clearly thought would help. Still, a shift in philosophy means they're looking for signal callers who can also hurt opponents with their legs.
A four-star prospect out of Midland Legacy High School in Texas, Davila threw for 9,101 yards and 93 touchdowns during his prep career. He had consecutive 3,000-yard passing seasons as a junior and senior while throwing 66 touchdowns in those two seasons.
Because of how shallow the quarterback depth in the room is right now, Davila has signaled he'll follow the lead of defensive player Maverick Noonan and play in the bowl game. Then he'll depart the Cornhuskers on January 2.
Had the young quarterback decided to leave immediately, it would have meant only TJ Lateef and Jalyn Gramstad were on the roster and had actually played any college ball.
Still, Marcos Davila's departure also means that Nebraska now likely needs to find a way to land two quarterbacks in the transfer portal, as Gramstad is out of eligibility after this season.
