When the Sacramento State head coaching job came open, there was at least some buzz that former Nebraska football defensive star Mike Minter would get the job. As it turns out, the FCS school instead turned to former UNLV assistant Brennan Marion.
Minter, who spent 10 years as the head coach of the Campbell Camels has been gradually trying to restart his coaching career. At some glances, it looks like he’s trying to get a reboot.
Either way, it looks like the ex-Nebraska football legend has found his next step. Minter is said to be joining Marrion at Sacramento State. Instead of being the head man, he’ll be the safeties coach/assistant head coach. The hire would mean that Marrion is clearly interested in adding the former Blackshirt’s voice when it comes to running his secondary. According to Matt Zenitz, Minter will be coaching the defensive backfield alongside Darrin Walls.
Former Nebraska football DB Mike Minter is back in the coaching ranks
Walls, a former Notre Dame and NFL DB, had been Albany’s co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach. Now he’s also taking the next step in his career. Both men will be trying to help Marrion, who comes over to Sacramento State after running the ‘Go-Go’ offense at UNLV.
That attack is a high-tempo, downhill run game that lines up two running backs next to the quarterback. It was most notably on display in his two seasons as the offensive coordinator at UNLV from 2023-2024.
Marrion knows what he wants from the offense, He’ll let the former Nebraska football legend, who was a defensive analyst this season with Western Michigan, have an impact on what the defense looks like.
