Things have been relatively quiet for the Nebraska football team on the recruiting front. However, things could change quickly, with wide receiver Matthew Gregory emerging as an impact player. The 4-star wide receiver is still technically looking at four final teams; however, the Huskers are trending quickly among recruiting analysts.

Gregory will be in Lincoln from June 12th to 14th, and it’s looking more and more like he might pull the commitment trigger when he takes in the town.

Matthew Gregory gives Nebraska football a real chance at a major receiver win

Gregory is the No. 93 overall player in the 2027 class, the No. 17 overall wide receiver, and the sixth overall player in his class from Pennsylvania, per the Rivals Industry Rankings. In addition to Nebraska, he also has offers from Penn State, Syracuse, Texas A&M, and Michigan.

The wide receiver was also once heavily recruited by Colorado, but the Buffaloes appear to have fallen by the wayside as he narrows his list of teams he’s considering.

Gregory had 48 catches for 350 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. He established himself as a playmaking threat and showcased his deep play ability in the process. He had 16 total touchdowns last season as well.

Now, Nebraska finds itself squaring off against one of the hottest teams in the Big Ten in recruiting. UCLA, under new head coach Bob Chesney, has been on an incredible run. The Bruins have reeled in one 4 or 5-star player after another. It’s the kind of recruiting heater that program hasn’t seen in quite some time and offers yet another roadblock on the road to coming back and really being a power in the Big Ten.

Matthew Gregory could give Nebraska football a rankings boost and a needed win over UCLA

However, the Huskers look like they might be able to stop UCLA in its tracks when it comes to Gregory. On Tuesday morning, Steve Wiltfong, Bryan Munson, and Tim Verghese all put in predictions for NU to land the 6-foot, 170-pound wide receiver.

As a general rule, when so many analysts all enter the same prediction right about the same time, someone has spilled the beans. It’s also worth noting that at least one Husker staffer posted on Sunday in a way that generally hints at a commitment. It’s possible Matthew Gregory is a silent commit for the Huskers.

Matt Rhule and Co. got off to a roaring start in their 2027 recruiting class. For most of the winter, they were ranked inside the Top 10. Things have cooled off as the spring rolled on, and Nebraska is ranked just No. 15 in the Rivals team rankings and No. 25 in the 247Sports rankings. If the team can secure someone like Matthew Gregory, it would be a significant boost to the rankings.

That would especially be the case since Nebraska is now looking at UCLA running past them. The Bruins have the No. 11-ranked class on 247Sports and the No. 3-ranked class on Rivals. Matthew Gregory picking the Huskers over the Bruins would be a win on several fronts. It could also go a little way towards tamping down what’s been quite a bit of negativity around the program.
