Just when it seemed like the Nebraska football team might have to brace itself to lose a top assistant coach to the program that Husker fans hate the most, things took a quick turn back to the positive.
Running backs coach EJ Barthel was recently mentioned as a possible candidate for Texas's open running backs coach earlier this week. He had also reportedly gotten overtures from Penn State for their open spot before they hired former Temple head coach Stan Drayton. But the Cornhuskers are keeping the talented assistant getting a nice little raise for his troubles.
On3’s Sean Callahan was among the first to report that rather than let him get away; the Nebraska football team locked down EJ Barthel with an extension that will have him under contract until 2027 and will bump his pay up to $450,000 a year. That’s a not insignificant increase from what he was making at $293,000 annually.
Nebraska football manages to lock EJ Barthel down
This extension looks like the Huskers are now done putting their coaching staff together and also done worrying about the idea of an assistant leaving before spring practice starts for the 2025 campaign.
Assuming that Barthel is staying in town, it looks like Matt Rhule is officially done putting his staff back together after the departures of Tony White and Terrance Knighton started quite the dominos to fall.
The Nebraska football team can now just start looking towards the 2025 spring practice and of course, this fall.
