Could Indiana be nervous about taking on Nebraska in Lincoln this fall? Common sense says no, especially since the last time the Huskers took on the Hoosiers, it was an embarrassing blowout in favor of Curt Cignetti's squad. Still, things could be different in 2026, especially since IU might still be looking to gel after losing key starters like quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
CBS Sports recently put together an article listing "One key game that could define each top 25 team's season" and it's more than a little surprising that Austin Nivison believes the Cornhuskers' contest is that game for Indiana.
"In their quest to repeat as national champions," Nivison wrote. "The Hoosiers have to replace a number of key pieces, not the least of which is Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. This road trip to Nebraska should be the first real test for a new-look Indiana squad -- and it comes right before consecutive games against Ohio State and Michigan."
"If the Hoosiers stumble in Lincoln, they could be staring down the barrel of three straight losses."
Matt Rhule and Nebraska football could make Indiana’s Lincoln trip far more dangerous
It's an interesting take, especially considering that most national analysts seem to think the Huskers will stumble. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule's seat isn't officially hot, but he's under some serious pressure from the fanbase. That pressure has certainly increased with NU's schedule for 2026.
There's even some talk that Nebraska could really bottom out to another losing record, considering teams like Indiana are on the schedule. The Big Ten slate is especially difficult considering how much Rhule has struggled against the conference since arriving in Lincoln.
On the other hand, if Rhule and Co. can really challenge Indiana and maybe even pull off an upset if the Hoosiers aren't taking Nebraska seriously enough, it would not only be a game that defines Cignetti's season but could also signal a massive turnaround for a program desperate for big wins.
