While the Nebraska baseball team is having a resurgent season and the basketball team had its best year ever, the sentiment around Matt Rhule and Co. is decidedly negative. As more and more analysts put out their "way too early" and "bold" predictions, more and more articles don't profess much faith in the job Rhule is doing in Lincoln.
Count CBS Sports' Tom Fornelli among those who think this fall could be a long one for Rhule. In his bold predictions article, the writer even believes there might be a coaching search in Lincoln after the season is over.
Could Nebraska undergo another coaching search?
Officially, Fornelli's prediction is that Nebraska won't make a bowl game in 2026. He also believes should he be right, things will boil over around Memorial Stadium.
"This prediction is not based on Dylan Raiola leaving," Fornelli wrote. "I'm of the opinion that Anthony Colandrea might not be the NFL prospect Raiola is, but he's a better fit for what Dana Holgorsen likes to do."
Prediction has Nebraska football missing a bowl game in 2026
"No, this prediction is based on the fact that just because he's a fit doesn't mean Colandrea is a star, and Nebraska's schedule is not easy. The Huskers will be on the road for Michigan State, Oregon, Illinois and Iowa. They could also be underdogs at home to Indiana and Ohio State, and maybe even Washington, too. If this bold prediction comes true, odds are there will be a coaching search in Lincoln this winter."
Fornelli is far from the first person to point out how tough the Huskers' schedule is this fall. Even the most optimistic of analysts believe an 8-4 record is about as good as Rhule and Co. could possibly achieve. Most feel like a 6-6 regular season is the most likely outcome.
The problem is that Rhule, like many of the coaches that came before him, tend to lose games they should win. And with so many games on the schedule they're expected to lose, Nebraska's margin of error is slim.
