Nebraska football is officially on the outside looking in of the Top 25 polls for the first time this season. They're on the outside looking in for both of them. And while that's hardly surprising after two straight losses is a milestone for the year.

The Huskers had received votes or had been a part of the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches top-25 polls all season until Sunday's release. Granted, it's not as though they were safely inside those polls entering the weekend.

In fact, Nebraska football got just a single vote in both polls. It's likely that one of the Huskers' beat writers as well as perhaps Matt Rhule himself was offering a bit of a gift to Nebraska but even they couldn't bring themselves a vote after the 21-17 loss to Ohio State.

Nebraska football sets milestone for 2024 season

It may not seem like much, but when you consider where the Nebraska football program has been the last few years, it says something about what Matt Rhule is doing that NU was getting votes for the entirety of the regular season.

It's also possible that should the Huskers move to 6-3 after this weekend, they will begin to get votes again. Though they likely need to pull off what are almost certainly going to need to be upsets against Iowa, Wisconsin or USC in order to have any shot at the actual Top 25 for either poll.

For now, it's a step forward, no matter how small it might be. And that's something Nebraska footballl fans should consider once the season is over and discussions about the future begin.
