The Nebraska football team could use it's new wide receiver coach to go out and poach a talented pass catcher.

Now that the Nebraska football team has its “new” offensive coordinator and its totally new wide receivers coach in place, it’s time for both to start paying dividends in terms of players. And it looks like a place to start has fallen into their laps.

Kentucky Wildcats receiver Dane Key announced his intention to enter the transfer portal on Wednesday, just hours after the Huskers announced Daikiel Shorts as the new WR coach. Is it possible that Key is at least considering the Huskers?

What is clear is that members of the Nebraska football team are considering Key. It took no time at all for some fans to notice that star quarterback Dylan Raiola started following the wide out on social media by the end of the first day that Key announced he planned to transfer.

Nebraska football could pursue Kentucky receiver Dane Key in the portal

Of course, Raiola following Key doesn’t mean the Cornhuskers have a great chance to land him. That great chance is more indicative of Shorts, who is considered a great recruiter and someone who is well liked by his players.

And now, he’s working with an offensive coordinator who is well respected throughout the sport as one of the best offensive minds. Where Holgorsen falls short is sometimes in the recruiting circles, but his new assistant could pick up the slack there.

Key was the leading receiver for Kentucky in 2024 by a wide margin, hauling down 47 receptions for 715 yards and 2 touchdowns. That he’ll be a senior could also be attractive to the Cornhuskers as he can put players like Cortez Mills under his wing for 2024 and then hand over the reigns.

Granted, to make that a reality, it’s assumed the Nebraska football team will have to fight off dozens of suitors. But with the acknowledgement from Holgorsen that they plan to host 20-30 portal guys this offseason, they’re gearing up for the fight.
