When it took days and days for Emmett Johnson to get selected by the Kansas City Chiefs, there were more than a few people surprised that the former Nebraska football star went as late as he did. Since that day, Johnson has done nothing but prove to everyone that he shouldn’t have gone as late as he did. That includes his latest and final preseason outing on Friday night.
Johnson rushed seven times for 39 yards in the Chiefs’ final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. As has been the case all preseason, Johnson once again demonstrated that he’s effective both on the ground and through the air. In addition to his rushing yards, he added 2 catches for 15 yards and had another chunk gain through the air called back because of a penalty.
Those chunk plays are just the cost of doing business, but it seems the former Nebraska football star has been hurt more than most by the Chiefs committing penalties at just the wrong time.
Overall, the rookie fifth-round pick put together a strong finish to an encouraging preseason, one where he rushed 26 times for 123 yards and a touchdown and added a 6 catches for 35 yards and no drops on seven targets.
Chiefs must find regular-season role for former Nebraska football star Emmett Johnson
Johnson's primary competition for a depth role, Brashard Smith, was plenty productive on Friday as well. He finished the 16-carry, 72-yard effort in his own right Friday, so it remains to be seen how the running back positions will slot out. It’s thought that Kenneth Walker will be the starting back and that Emari Demercado will be RB2.
Considering how many chances Johnson has gotten ahead of the regular season, it sure seems like he’ll get a much bigger chance to get some serious carries and some serious targets once the games actually matter.
If Emmett Johnson is making the impression it appears he is, Nebraska football fans will have another team they can root for every week, even if they understand that he isn’t going to be getting anywhere near 20 carries a game unless the running back room takes some serious injury hits.
