Emmett Johnson was selected in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, and the former Nebraska Cornhusker is already proving himself as more than worth that draft pick.

As a Day 3 pick, Johnson had to wait to hear his name called until the 161st overall pick, and now, even ESPN's Peter Schrager is singing his praises.

Schrager shared that everyone in Kansas City is praising Johnson's work so far, even as a Day 3 pick, which isn't something that the Chiefs are new to.

Isiah Pacheco, who just spent four impressive seasons as a running back for the Chiefs, was also taken on the third day of the NFL Draft, and it worked out pretty darn well for Kansas City.

Peter Schrager expects big things out of Emmett Johnson

"After this last couple of days of what they've had going on, there's a little buzz there already about their Day 3 pick, Emmett Johnson, the running back out of Nebraska," Schrager said. "Whereas you lose Isiah Pacheco, you also pick up a new Day 3 guy who led the nation in yards per scrimmage."

Schrager went on to say that Johnson was the talk of the town "after the rookie mini camp" before allowing ESPN Chiefs writer Nate Taylor to expand on the former Cornhusker's talent.

"He is the player that got a lot of receptions in rookie mini camp, showed a lot of speed, shows an ability to get yards after the catch," Taylor said. "He could easily be able to find himself a role as a rookie."

Johnson will be competing against the Chiefs' veteran running backs to play a supporting role alongside future Hall of Fame quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the backfield.

Taylor shared that he expects Johnson to lineup next to running back Kenneth Walker III, with Emari Demercado and Brashard Smith playing the more consistent backup role for Kansas City this season.
