As the Nebraska football works to prepare for a 2025 season that most people expect to be an improvement over its successful 2024 campaign, there is one player that is simply shocked to still be in Lincoln.
Obviously, DeShon Singleton isn’t sad to get another year. He had applied for one as a matter of fact. However, the NCAA, in its infinite wisdom, denied his waiver before they were essentially forced by the courts to approve it. And in peak NCAA form, they’re not acting as though they’re a magnanimous organization that is using their powers to give players another chance.
The Nebraska football defensive back might be a bit surprised and confused as to why he all of the sudden was given another year after being told no and coming to grips with that, It’s clear he’s going to use this extra year to help both the Huskers and his future. And Matt Rhule and company are happy to have a veteran DB back in the fold. Especially considering all the changes that the roster has undergone since December 1.
DeShon Singleton stunned by extra year, ready to lead Nebraska football’s secondary
“It was just crazy,” Singleton told the media earlier this week. “Because I was going to bed asleep good, I was sleeping good knowing I’m about to go to the league and prepare for the draft. I mean it was no different than every day. I was just in shock because I got denied my waiver and now this dropped out of nowhere.”
"I was sleeping good knowing I was about to go the league."

Nebraska safety DeShon Singleton had his sights set on the NFL. But a "surprising" NCAA ruling allows Singleton another year of eligibility. Started each game last year & had 71 tackles.#Huskers @1011_News pic.twitter.com/7ongZEbQNz
Singleton is coming off his best year as a Nebraska Cornhusker by a wide margin. He was second on the team in total tackles with 71 while recording 3 passes defended and 1 interception.
Now, new defensive coordinator John Butler is said to have a way to best use the safety’s skillset. That’s likely one of the reasons DeShon Singleton is so happy to be back with the Nebraska football team. It’s entirely possible that while he was ready to go to the NFL and see what a pro career holds, he knows that another season could help those prospects and better set him up for his next move.
