The Nebraska football team was more active in the transfer portal this offseason than it ever has been. Year Two of Matt Rhule’s rebuild took on a very interesting look in no small part because it also lost quite a few pieces to other teams.

Considering how active the Huskers were, it should come as no surprise that they definitely got some diamonds in the rough. That includes one of the top safety commits in the entire class.

Dasan McCullough might not even really count as a “diamond in the rough” considering the kind of talent he showed when he was healthy. Of course, it’s also possible that for the Nebraska football program, he’s not going to strictly be a safety.

However, it shakes out, McCullough is considered one of the Huskers’ best gets. According to On3 he’s among the top 10 safeties in the portal. Sitting at No. 7 in the rankings after coming over to Lincoln from the Oklahoma Sooners.

Nebraska football’s Dasan McCullough in nation’s best safety transfers

McCullough mostly played linebacker last season with the Oklahoma Sooners, and it’s expected he’ll see time there for the Cornhuskers as well in 2025. However, he’s also thought to be “the man” to take NU’s hybrid LB/S spot on the defense and it’s clear that On3 beleives that’s a near perfect fit for him.

Dillon Thieneman (Purdue to Oregon), Kendal Daniels (Okey State to OU) Zechariah Poyser (Jacksonville State to Miami), Jahron Manning (ODU to Miss. State), Tamarcus Cooley (NC State to LSU), and Travor Randle (ULM to Prairie View A&M) were the six players about McCullough on the list.

Cole Wisniewski (North Dakota State to Texas Tech), Tyson Flowers (Rice to Virginia Tech), and Jadon Canady (Ole Miss to Oregon) rounded out this Top 10 safety commit list through the portal.

McCullough suffered through injuries and playing time issues in 2024, but in his first two years in the sport, he totaled 78 tackles, 6 passes defended and 4 sacks. He’s someone Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule talked about as an integral part of the defensive plan in 2025 and it appears at least On3 believes he’s up to the task.
