The Nebraska football team isn’t planning on being very active in the transfer portal, but Matt Rhule has pinpointed one target as a “must-get.”

CharMar Brown entered the portal on the day it opened, looking to build on a great start to his career with North Dakota State. Once he entered, the Huskers pounced, but they’ve got some stout competition for the Jerry Rice Award winner in the form of the Miami Hurricanes.

Nebraska football makes full-court press for transfer star CharMar Brown

After Brown took a visit to Miami late last week, there were some rumblings that the Nebraska football team was out of the running. However, a new update suggests the Huskers are still very much in the race.

Brown visited NU on Thursday and met with Rhule, offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, and running backs coach E.J. Barthel. The meeting went pretty well, considering he shared a photo of the quartet on X to show them hanging out and clowning around.

The Nebraska coaches were there to explain to the former FCS standout what his role would be in Lincoln. On that note, it’s not entirely clear what that role might be, considering the Huskers have all but committed to returning rusher Emmett Johnson as the starter.

Johnson’s 598 yards rushing in 2024 finished 16 yards behind the team’s leading rusher, Dante Dowdell, who transferred to Kentucky over the winter. Johnson himself had considered leaving for greener pastures, but in the end decided not to portal away and is projected to be “the man” with Kwinten Ives, the projected No. 2 back for the Cornhuskers.

CharMar Brown, a native of Omaha and former Creighton Prep standout, had a fantastic first year of college ball. He ran for 1,181 yards and 15 touchdowns in 16 games. He also took home the award for top freshman in the FCS for the Bison.

That performance makes it very clear why the Nebraska football team would love to add him to the running back room. At the moment, there isn’t a timetable for his commitment announcement, but it’s not expected to be too much longer before he pulls the trigger.
