The Nebraska football team has been locking down its roster over the last few weeks and head coach Matt Rhule has said that he mostly feels as though the team that plays through the 2025 season is the one he’s got. However, it looks like he might be considering at least one more addition.

The Huskers are officially in the derby for former Creighton Prep running back CharMar Brown. He recently entered the portal from North Dakota State, where he had a heck of a 2024 season. There is one wrinkle here. While NU will be considered a frontrunner for Brown because of his hometown ties, the Cornhuskers are far from the only Power Conference team interested in him.

The Miami Hurricanes have entered the picture, and he checked out what they had to offer on Monday. As for right now, On3 still has Brown as leaning towards the Nebraska football team, but that could certainly change. Especially since the lure of getting out to Miami is going to be tough for someone who has so far spent his career in Omaha and North Dakota.

The Huskers are, of course, looking at Brown because they lost a running back who amassed more than 600 yards in 2024 in Dante Dowdell. Dowdell’s departure this winter via the portal to Kentucky was a bit of a surprise, considering it was thought he’d see an even better campaign under new head coach Dana Holgorsen.

His exit means that Nebraska is looking for someone to pair with projected starter Emmett Johnson. At the moment, there’s been a lot of talk about Kwinten Ives, though when a back who won the Jerry Rice award is suddenly available, it’s not surprising Rhule has decided he’d be a great addition.

Brown was a true freshman last season, which is of course another reason why the Huskers would love to see him come back to the state. Despite being a first year player, he ran for 1,181 yards and 15 touchdowns.

It’s a safe bet that the young back would come to Nebraska as someone who had a real chance to win the starting job over EJ. How exactly that would sit with the back who was expected to enter the portal in the winter, but ended up coming back. Things could move quickly now that CharMar Brown has had his visit to Miami.
