Carter Nelson hasn’t come close to the kind of Nebraska football career he hoped. Motivated by that, the in-state star may be ready to turn the corner and show what he can do. His coaches certainly seem to think he's taking another step up ahead of the 2026 season.
Tight ends coach Marcus Satterfield went out of his way to talk about how impressive he’s found Nelson since the Huskers started fall camp and preparations for the season when he met with the media earlier this week.
“He keeps getting better,” Satterfield said. “It doesn't stop now just because the season is about to kick off. It’s going to have to continue to grow as we go through the season.”

As Nelson enters his third season in Lincoln, he’s practiced with an “unbelievable sense of urgency,” Satterfield added. The coach also hopes the way the tight end has practiced will carry into the regular season, and he’ll see the field early and often.
Satterfield also knows that Carter Nelson's success is important to Husker fans. As a homegrown guy who starred in eight-man football, people across the state want to see him graduate to a collegiate superstar. The coach said he’s often asked about his charge when he’s out and about.
“When you go two offseasons in a row where you don't get the weight room, the maximum output of the weight room and you miss practices, it is hard, even though he has been here for three years, to step in, pick it up and go,” Satterfield said. “I'm hard on Carter because I know what he needs to look like when he is out there. He has taken it as a challenge.”
Satterfield said the Nebraska player is bigger and stronger than he’s been since coming to Lincoln. Now it’s all about his game taking a step up to the next level.
