New Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has been using the last few weeks putting together his coaching staff and it turns out his latest addition is a former Nebraska football star.
On Monday, ESPN’s Todd Archer reported that Carlos Polk will be the Cowboys’ assistant special teams coach. This move comes after the former Husker interviewed for Dallas’ special teams coordinator vacancy. While he didn’t get that job because it went to Nick Sorensen, it appears that Schottenheimer was plenty impressed by what Polk had to say.
The Cowboys hire is the latest stop for the former Nebraska football Blackshirt. Polk has held the same position he just got hired in Dallas for with the Chicago Bears since 2022. During his coaching career he spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers, and Jacksonville Jaguars along with Chicago and Dallas.
Former Nebraska football star finds his latest coaching stop
Polk’s coaching career started after he played in the NFL from 2001-2008, starting his career with the Chargers before finishing out with the Cowboys.
It stands to reason that one man who vouched for Polk was former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, who hired Polk in Chicago when he got the head coaching job there. Eberflus was fired this season and has landed himself in Dallas as well.
A vocal leader on the Nebraska football defense, Polk ended his career in Lincoln with 227 career tackles. The former linebacker, who started every game in 1999 and 2000, finished his career with 32 tackles for loss and 10 sacks.
