A Nebraska football alum is going to the NFL.

I love hearing about former Nebraska football stars getting the chance to live their dream in the National Football League. However, this time it is not a player. This time, a coach gets to join a new staff.

Former Cowboys assistant special teams coach Carlos Polk is joining Urban Meyer in Jacksonville. There, he will serve the same role of special teams assistant.

I think it’s awesome that he is joining Meyer’s staff. No matter what you think of Meyer, there is no denying that he is an incredible coach. When you add Polk to the equation and what he brings to the table, it really kind of solidifies the staff.

I’ll admit, while I’m happy to see him join the Jacksonville staff, it is kind of bittersweet. I remember last year when I wanted him as the linebackers coach. I thought he would be a great fit here in Lincoln. I like the job that Mike Dawson and Barrett Ruud are doing, so it isn’t exactly the worst thing in the world that Nebraska missed out on his services.

At Nebraska he was one of the most prolific linebackers the program had. He recorded 227 tackles, 32 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks while in Lincoln. He was also a part of the team that won the 1997 national championship. That is certainly a lot of experience to bring to the table. He knows how to win, and he knows what it takes to be an impact player.

I’ll be interested to see how he impacts the Jacksonville special teams unit. He was certainly one of the more impactful players while a member of the Nebraska football program. I don’t expect that to change as a member of the Jacksonville coaching staff.

Perhaps one of the more underrated things that he will bring to Jacksonville is experience in the National Football League. He coached the San Diego Chargers from 2009-2012 and also worked with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2014-2018. He has been around the coaching ranks. That may be helpful as Meyer looks to make an impact in his first NFL go-around.

In any event, I will certainly be following his progress. Hopefully, he can parlay this into a bigger coaching gig in the near future. As the Jacksonville Jaguars are set to remake their roster, that is certainly possible. One has to wonder if Polk’s aggressive style will be able to rub off on the Jacksonville special teams unit as they look to gain control of a revamped AFC South.
