Nebraska football's experience in Arrowhead Stadium last year was so enjoyable that AD Troy Dannen is considering a return trip rather soon. In fact, Dannen said earlier on Friday evening that the Huskers could play their season opener against Northern Illinois in 2027 at the Kansas City Chiefs' home stadium.

Dannen discussed the possibility of playing another game in KC during a press conference announcing the "Big Red Rebuild" was officially moving ahead after getting approval from the NU Regents on Friday afternoon.

Nebraska football exploring another Arrowhead Stadium game

The Nebraska football home stadium will now start getting a facelift and be scaled down, as the final project will pare seating from its current level to about 80,000 when all the work is done in 2028. Part of the construction will reduce capacity at Memorial during the 2027 season, with the stadium seating around 65,000 fans.

It's the reduced capacity that has Dannen thinking the Huskers' 2027 opener might take place in Kansas City as it did in 2025. Moving the game against Northern Illinois would mean playing in the 76,416-seat Arrowhead, allowing for about 11,000 more tickets to be sold.

Arrowhead serves as a home away from home for Nebraska

Of course, the rationale behind giving up the home opener in Lincoln and playing a couple of hours up the road is also because the game becomes more of an event. Nebraska football fans always travel well, and they did so to the point in 2025 that Cincinnati, which was technically the home team, complained about how it felt like a road game.
