Former Nebraska standout RB finds his whopping fourth team through the portal

Once a rising star, a former Nebraska running back just made his third transfer move in under two years.

There was a time when Ajay Allen was considered one of the most up and coming Nebraska football running backs in years. Then he decided to move on from the Huskers. And since moving on, the talented player really hasn’t stopped moving.

Ajay Allen was back in the transfer portal this spring and just recently found a new team. According to Matt Zenitz he’s signed with the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. And while we all wish him well with his new squad, the news story isn’t that he’s got a new team, it’s how many he’s gone through since leaving Lincoln after the 2022 season.

Former Nebraska running back keeps moving

After Allen left Nebraska he landed with the Miami Hurricanes. For a while it looked like he found a real home. He carried 70 times for 361 yards and 5 touchdowns. However, his production plummeted last season, rushing just 24 times for 183 yards and 2 TDs. So he decided to enter the portal after the season.

Allen chose Florida International, wanting to stay in the Sunshine State. Except his stay was quite short. Just last month, he opened spring practice with the Panthers, seemingly knowing he would share the starting running back job with redshirt senior Kejon Owens and sophomore Devonte Lyons.

Something didn’t go right as spring practice unfolded because when the portal opened, the former Nebraska standout jumped ship again. Now he’s landed at Tulsa, despite previously saying he really didn’t want to leave the state of Florida.

It seems likely the Golden Hurricanes were able to offer him a spot where he could be the starter all on his own. Maybe they offered him a bigger NIL bag.

Ajay Allen is hardly the first player to transfer somewhere in the winter and then transfer somewhere else a few months later. But it’s never a great look. Here’s hoping the former Nebraska football running back has found a real home and can show people what he can do.
