The Big Ten baseball tournament continues to have the silliest format of any conference tournament this postseason. Modeling itself after the World Cup and other soccer tournaments, the conference locked itself into Pool Play, which meant several pointless games that had no effect on the tournament outcome.
That included a Thursday game between Michigan State and Oregon and a Friday morning game between USC and Washington. That Friday morning game was especially silly because it also meant that Nebraska vs Oregon, which does have an impact as it determines the Pool A winner, got pushed back to Saturday morning due to rain most of the rest of the day on Friday.
The Huskers or Ducks will now have to play a double header. First to determine who gets to the semifinal and then in the semifinal game against Penn State. Should one of these two teams than beat the Nittany Lions, they’ll play in the finals on Sunday, meaning three games in two days. Not ideal for the Nebraska Cornhuskers or Oregon Ducks.
Nebraska Cornhuskers softball keeps rolling
While the Nebraska baseball team waited and waited and waited to try and play against Oregon, the Huskers’ softball team was taking care of business in a big way.
After rolling through the regionals, they took on the Tennessee Volunteers in the first game of their regional and, continued to roll. This time they won 5-2 on Friday evening. That means when they take on the Vols on Saturday, it will be for a bid in the Women’s College World Series. And of course, thanks to starting things off with a victory, they will get at least two shots at taking down the national seed.
The second game in the Super Regional starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Zavion Griffin-Haynes names Nebraska a finalist
The Nebraska Cornhuskers football program is looking to make some serious moves this summer with some of the best recruits in the country. While none have committed to the Huskers yet, Matt Rhule and company appear to be on the verge of nailing some pledges down. One such elite target, moving closer to picking his school, is Zavion Griffin-Haynes.
The Huskers are going up against Florida State, among others. The showdown means Rhule is specifically doing battle with the first defensive coordinator that he hired when he got to Nebraska.
Tony Davis named to Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame
Husker legend Tony Davis was one of eight individuals inducted into the Cotton Bowl Classic Hall of Fame during enshrinement ceremonies on Friday. Davis closed his NU career with more than 2,400 rushing yards during his three seasons from 1973 to 1975. Davis excelled as a sophomore, rushing for 1,114 yards for Coach Tom Osborne’s first Nebraska Cornhuskers team. Now he’s enshrined in yet another Hall of Fame.
