On Friday, the Nebraska women’s flag football team announced where it will play its home games. The newest Husker sport will play at the Barbara Hibner Field. The field is currently the home of the Huskers’ soccer team.
The stadium seats 2,500 fans, but capacity can expand through berms and standing-room-only areas should that become necessary. The team will play a few club-level games in 2027 and then start its first official season in 2028. The program has been racking up commitments this spring and summer and will hold 15 scholarships for female student-athletes. The season itself will run from January to May.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers flag football team will be coached by Liz Sowers, a former five-time national champion coach at Ottawa University. The associate head coach will be her sister, Katie Sowers. Sowers was the first woman to coach in a Super Bowl.
Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball loses transfer pitcher to MLB
A late transfer addition who would have been a prominent pitcher for Nebraska baseball next season is instead turning pro. Left-hander Zach Bates will sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team that selected him last weekend in the MLB draft.
Bates became the final player taken in the 613-pick event in a moment that now changes his plans after he committed to the Huskers in mid-June. “It was kind of strange because very good spots were very interested but then they wouldn’t really pull the trigger on it because they had a little doubt in me being healthy,” Bates said. “I truly think I’m going to be ready for opening day.”
The Dodgers believed in his potential enough to draft the 21-year-old, who still had two more seasons of college eligibility. Bates pitched as a freshman at Iowa Central and became an All-Big Ten closer at Illinois in 2025 with a 2.83 earned-run average across 23 2/3 innings with 34 strikeouts and 16 walks. While the Nebraska Cornhuskers thought they might have a valuable bullpen piece, they need to go back to the drawing board.

Should Blue and his group win the suit, it seems unlikely he’ll return to the Nebraska Cornhuskers considering he didn’t get a ton of playing time last season.
