Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball star Dylan Carey was not selected in this weekend’s MLB Draft for reasons that still pass understanding. Among other reasons that it’s surprising he wasn’t selected is that he was named the best shortstop in college baseball this past season.

Carey did find himself a team on Monday, signing a UDFA deal with the New York Mets. By signing with the NL team, Carey becomes the third Husker from this year’s team to continue with a Major League Baseball organization after Ty Horn and Carson Jasa were selected in the third round of the MLB Draft.

The Brooks Wallace Award winner also earned All-America recognition this season, receiving first-team honors by College Baseball Foundation and third-team honors from Perfect Game. The shortstop was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten after batting .353 with 16 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 65 RBI and 53 runs scored.

The senior became the program’s all-time leader in career doubles this season and was the ninth Husker in program history to reach 200 career hits, 150 runs and 150 RBI. It’s possible that the Nebraska Cornhuskers star is about to demonstrate what a massive mistake so many teams made by passing on him over and over.

Pair of Nebraska Cornhuskers teammates become NL Central rivals

Speaking of Jasa and Horn, both players were selected in the 3rd round, just four picks apart. They’ll also be playing with NL Central teams. Horn was picked by the Cincinnati Reds as the No. 94 overall player. Jasa was selected by the Cubs as the No. 98 overall player.

Jasa was Nebraska’s ace in 2026 and the sixth All-American selection under Huskers head coach Will Bolt. Jasa also became the first starter to win double-digit games in a season since Johnny Dorn in 2007. Overall, Jasa is just the 13th pitcher to accomplish the feat, posting a 10-2 record with a 3.59 ERA. Over 87.2 innings, Jasa struck out 117 batters and cut his walk rate by over 50 percent with 47 walks.

Nebraska has been named a possible thorn in Indiana's side before. Earlier this week, On a recent episode of the Crain & Cone podcast, Jake Crain laid out why he thinks the Huskers have a chance: “Indiana, at Nebraska, October 10th. And here's why. I'm high on Colandrea. Y'all know that. I'm don't get pulled over high on Colandrea … But also, if you look at the way this schedule works out, with Ohio State, this is right before Indiana plays Ohio State. The week before, you go on the road to Nebraska; Boneyard's going to be rattling. I think Nebraska...new quarterback! Right? Josh Hoover. We'll see. We'll see.”

Nebraska Cornhuskers commit Trae Taylor earned his fifth-star from 247Sports earlier this spring. Now he’s gotten it from Rivals as well. His stock just keeps rising as a quarterback in the 2027 class.
