John Cook, Harper Murray, Merritt Beason and the rest … a lonely Nebraska Cornhuskers fanbase turns its lonely eyes to you. And you delivered. Again. In a season that’s starting to look even better than a year ago.
The Huskers took to the court on Sunday fresh off a sweep over what has become bitter rival Wisconsin to sweep regular Big Ten doormat Northwestern. Normally, the win on Sunday might not be really worth mentioning.
However, after Saturday’s disaster, Nebraska Cornhuskers nation needed something positive to lean on. And as has been the case for the vast majority of the John Cook era, his team provided it.
Nebraska Cornhuskers sweep their way to victory again
Make no mistake about it. Had NU somehow played poorly, it would have been a big deal. Northwestern is now 2-10 in the Big Ten. They are better than just four other teams in the conference.
But Nebraska didn’t struggle. Instead they swept themselves to their 20th straight victory since that upset by SMU. The match that had head coach Cook talk about how his players needed to adjust the way they were approaching things. It seems like they have.
On Sunday, the Huskers beat the Wildcats 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 while also helping the team set an attendance record in its home court. NU hit .287 and held the Wildcats to hit .082. Nebraska had 7 blocks with 7 aces. Merritt Beason recorded 9 kills and hit .643. Jackson had 8 kills.
While the biggest matchup of the season is still on the horizon aways, there are two solid opponents coming up this week. On Thursday, the Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team will take on an Oregon squad that is 4th in the Big Ten with a 9-3 record and a 17-4 record overall. Then on Saturday, they’ll face off against a 17-4 Washington team. Both squads could provide interesting warmups for the final push.
