Things are looking a bit grim for the Nerbaska basketball team these days. There’s the five game losing streak of course front and center. However, where things are looking especially bad is the Huskers chances of making the NCAA Tournament at the end of the regular season.
The latest blow was a loss to the USC Trojans, that was also the second straight home loss by a team that has been one of the best programs in the country when they get to host almost anyone in PBA. In a lot of ways, it was the final chink in the armor as new bracket projections show that the Huskers will now be sitting at home when the Big Dance rolls around.
If there is a bit of a silver lining when it come to the Nebraska basketball team missing the tournament, it’s that despite all the things going wrong, they’re still within shouting distance. Both ESPN and Fox’s latest projections show the Cornhuskers as one of the “first four out.”
Nebraska basketball NCAA Tournament chances aren’t dead, but they’re on life support
According to Joe Lunardi, the Huskers are in the same boat as Indiana, Cincinnati and SMU as far as being the first four out. He has Pitt, Ohio State, Texas, and San Diego State as the last four in. The teams in worse shape than NU? Lunardi has VCU, Arizona State, Xavier and Wake Forest as the “next four out.”
Fox’s Mike Decourcy, on the other hand, has Pitt, Ohio State, UCF, Wake Forest among his last four teams to get into the tournament, while Texas, SMU, Nebraska and Xavier are listed as his first four teams out of it.
All of this means that the Nebraska basketball team’s chances of making the tournament aren’t totally dead. But should the Huskers go through a three-game stretch against three Top-25 teams with three losses, it might be time to pull the plug.
