Fresh off a record-setting season for the Nebraska basketball team, Fred Hoiberg has been given a new extension as part of his reward. The records in question are the highest ever finish in the Big Ten. The Huskers clinched the second-ranked spot in the B1G thanks to a win over Iowa on Sunday. NU also tied its most wins (26) ever in one season. Should Hoiberg's squad win one more game this year, it would officially be a school record.

The university announced the extension one day after an emotional senior day saw Fred's son, Sam Hoiberg, play his final game in Lincoln. The younger Hoiberg went from a walk-on roster filler to one of the best guards in the Big Ten this year, especially as someone who picks opponents' pockets at a brisk pace.

"Fred Hoiberg is a tremendous representative of the University of Nebraska, the Lincoln community, and our state," AD Troy Dannen said in a statement announcing the coach had signed through the 2031-2032 season. "We are extremely proud that he will continue to lead the Nebraska men’s basketball program well into the future."

Fred Hoiberg's extension caps a record-setting Nebraska basketball season in the best way

"Fred has built this program step by step and his leadership has Nebraska positioned to continue to compete at a high level in the Big Ten Conference and nationally. Fred is one of the most respected coaches in the country by his peers, and his success has been recognized throughout the college basketball world."

The Huskers have won 20+ games for three straight seasons for the first time in school history. In addition to entering the Big Ten tournament with a 26-5 record and the 2-seed, they were ranked ninth in the most recent AP and Coaches polls on March 2. Nebraska has been ranked for most of the 2025-26 season, reaching a program-best No. 5 national ranking in January.

Fred Hoiberg's turnaround of the program at Nebraska over the last three years has been especially astonishing, considering he never posted a better than .500 record in his first four seasons. The first half of his NU career was so bad that despite going 60-30 in his last three seasons, he's still three games under .500 (110-113) in Lincoln.
