The Nebraska basketball team is still months away from the new season but it might score a big win in the very near future.
According to a new report from Front Office Sports, Michigan head coach Dusty May might be on his way out of the college ranks. The report says several NBA teams would love to land the man who delivered the Wolverines a national title. While fans in Ann Arbor would be devastated, fans in Lincoln could be popping champagne corks.
Dusty May could give Nebraska basketball a surprising break if he leaves Michigan
Considering that May is just 49 years old and has only been at Michigan for two years, Nebraska likely thought it would have to deal with one of the best coaches in the country for quite a while. However, On Monday, the Magic fired Jamahl Mosley, a day after the team blew a 3–1 lead against the top-seeded Pistons in the first round of the NBA playoffs. It was the Magic’s third first-round exit under Mosley. Throughout the season, Mosley’s job security was called into question as the Magic underachieved despite a talented young core.
Earlier this year, FOS reported there was mutual interest between May and the Magic. That was before there was an official job opening. Now that the Magic can officially start looking for a replacement, the site believes May could get a call.
Dusty May’s Orlando Magic links give Nebraska basketball fans real reason to hope
May's success at Michigan (though he did only barely beat Nebraska) is just part of the reason why Orlando is interested. He's well known in the Sunshine State. He was an assistant at Florida before becoming the head coach of Florida Atlantic, where he led the Owls to the 2023 Final Four.
Just a week ago, May addressed the topic of possibly jumping to the NBA, and he didn't exactly rule it out.
“I mean, obviously, we all think about that as younger coaches,” May said of coaching in the NBA. “But no it’s not something…our full attention has been on building this roster and plans of hopefully competing for a championship again next year.”
There's another reason why Nebraska basketball fans might feel like Dusty May could move on soon. He got a new contract from Michigan shortly after his squad won the title. However, he's previously said he will sign the deal in July. He dismisses it as just a formality but one has to wonder if he's waiting to see if an offer from Orlando or another NBA team comes calling
