Now that Nebraska has a stretch four player officially on board, Fred Hoiberg is gearing up to grab a stretch five who has a very familiar skill profile. If Sam Orme is the unofficial replacement for Berke Buyuktuncel, former Boise State center, Drew Fielder could essentially slide into the spot of unofficial replacement for Rienk Mast.

According to multiple reports from HuskersOnline, Fielder is in Lincoln Friday, and if Hoiberg's work so far in the Transfer Portal is any indication, there is a chance the 6-foot-11 center could be on board by the end of the day. Among the reasons why the Huskers might have an ace in the hole is that they've recruited him before.

Drew Fielder spent his first two seasons with the Georgetown Hoyas but entered the Transfer Portal last year. Nebraska at least kicked the tires on the big man, but he committed to USC and then eventually pivoted to Boise State at the last minute. If there's a hang-up, it's that he's bound to be expensive, considering how much he can offer both down low and beyond the arc.

Nebraska basketball is trying to close on Boise State transfer Drew Fielder

In the 2025-26 season with the Broncos, Fielder started 30 of 32 games. He was a second-team All-Mountain West pick after averaging 14.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He shot 54.7% from the field and 78.5% at the free-throw line. Most eyebrow-raising is his 40.9% (95-121) from 3-point range.

If there is a concern about Fielder sliding into Rienk Mast's spot, it is that he doesn't have the same assist numbers the latter had. There's also concern that, should he come to the Big Ten, the conference would be more physical than he's used to in the Big East and the Mountain West. Of course, Mast came over from Bradley and was still able to hold his own around the rim.

That Drew Fielder is visiting just a few days after the Transfer Portal opened makes it clear the former Boise State big man is a top target for Nebraska. Now it's about closing things out before he leaves town.
