It’s becoming clear that for the Nebraska baseball team, head coach Will Bolt is still searching for answers. And while he searches, the Huskers keep racking up losses. Friday night’s 5-3 loss was the third straight series opening defeat.
The series-opening losses in the conference have translated to series losses. NU is now 1-6 and technically ahead of only Ohio State in the Big Ten standings. The Buckeyes are currently winless in conference. That’s cold comfort for Bolt, who understands quite a bit more was expected of his squad after winning the Big Ten Tournament and finishing second in the regular season in 2024.
“The same conversation we’ve had about six times now in league play,” the Nebraska baseball coach said during his postgame radio interview. “Just not good enough. Playing nine complete innings of baseball, just struggling to do that right now.”
Nebraska baseball struggles again in latest Big Ten loss
More often than not, it’s been the NU offense that has been a real problem. After scoring a ton of runs against an overmatched Pepperdine team for 19 runs in two midweek games, it turns out it was more about the opponent than a team finally finding its feet.
The Cornhuskers struck out a combined 10 times against USC starter Caden Hunter and reliever Mason Edwards.
It’s not as though the Trojans are a powerhouse of the B1G right now either. The win saw them improve to 3-4 in conference. This was supposed to be a series where Nebraska could try and get right.
Instead, they’re stuck hoping to find a way to score some runs and win some games. There are still two more chances to win the series. Including a game on Saturday at 2pm.
Nebraska baseball needs to start racking up wins. And they need to do it soon. Oregon, who sits at the top of the conference, won’t face NU this year. And that means the Huskers need to win as many as they can, and hope for help if they want to compete for the conference crown.
