Matt Rhule's entry into DCU canon proves Nebraska trolls don't know how TV works

It wasn't enough that the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Bob Devaney, Frank Solich, Tom Osborne, and Johnny Rodgers all became part of DCU canon in the first few episodes of the HBO Max series, Lanterns. Current Huskers head coach Matt Rhule and his 2027 recruiting class are part of that canon too, along with talented Rushville quarterback Noah Macon.

All of this is good advertising for Nebraska in general (even if it pokes fun at small-town Nebraska and Husker fans plenty of times), but it also gave social media trolls something new to complain about. Not that social media trolls need any more things to complain about, since they complain about literally everything.

On Sunday night, when Rhule made a cameo in the season finale of Lanterns, some trolls decided to rip the Nebraska coach for "taking time away from his team" to be on the show. In the process, it seems they don't understand that the comic book show about the galactic super cop Green Lantern isn't filmed in front of a live audience.

Rhule showing up on the October 4 episode does not mean he shot he scenes the week before 5-0 Nebraska plays Indiana. While it's obviously not known exactly when he filmed the scene it's an incredibly safe bet that he did so during the offseason. It's also not as though his five minutes of screen time (max) took days, weeks or months to shoot.

Despite those facts being known to anyone who understands television, people who love to act like clowns on social media did what they do best: act like clowns.

"Matt Rhule was really in Lanterns instead of getting his team prepared for the season," wrote one particularly confused Iowa fan.

"This s--- is so dumb. Won’t make a Green Lantern show but damnit gotta get a cameo from Nebraska’s HC," wrote another who also seem confused about the show was indeed a Green Lantern show.

"The way y'all are acting like Rhule doing a cameo isn't the most on-brand thing he's ever done is killing me. Man, would coach a Sunday league game if they let him wear that jacket," wrote a third.

The good news is that plenty of Nebraska fans also loved seeing the Husker head coach make a cameo on the show.

Unfortunately, the number of people who were excited to talk about the cameo let a pretty big spoiler slip.

And of course, as one Nebraska fan pointed out, Rhule is just the latest NU-connected guy to dip into acting. Earlier this summer, former Husker defensive back Ceyair Wright stepped away from football in order to get in front of the camera for a movie. Like Rhule, Wright plans to return to the football field once his time as an actor is done.
