One of the interesting things about the comic book universes of Marvel and DC is that Marvel tends to use real ciites as its backdrop and then explains them away as "alternate universes." DC on the other hand, uses mostly fictional cities and on occasion will put them in real states. Such is the case with the newest entry in the DCU, Lanterns which most of the series premiere set in a fictional Nebraska town after a mass shooting at a high school football game draws the attention of Hal Jordan (Green Lantern).

  • What makes the backdrop of Nebraska even more interesting is that, while the action might be taking place in a made-up small town, a scene in which Jordan interviews a man he believes to be an alien disguised as a regular trucker makes the Nebraska Cornhuskers officially part of the DCU canon.
  • In fact, Bob Devaney, Frank Solich, and Johnny Rodgers are all now part of DCU canon as well. As part of Jordan's investigation into the man, he first asks the suspect when the Huskers won their first National Championship. The man correctly answers 1970 under Bob Devaney. Jordan then asks who the first 200-yard rusher in school history was. The man again answers correctly that it was Frank Solich. Finally, Jordan asks who the Huskers' first Heisman winner was, and the man goes 3-for-3 in answering Rodgers.
  • Ironically, what trips up the impersonator is a question about Harry Potter, also entering those books and movies into DCU canon.

More Nebraska Cornhuskers and national news

  • One of the more intriguing position fights this fall camp will be the starting corner opposite Andrew Marshall. While the coaches haven't named the starter yet, wide receiver Quinn Clark has voted for Jeremiah Charles. The fourth-year player has also drawn plenty of praise from coaches and, for now, looks like the frontrunner.
  • The Nebraska soccer team opened its 2026 home slate with a 1-1 draw against the South Dakota Coyotes on Sunday afternoon at Barbara Hibner Stadium. The Huskers, now 1-0-1 in the season, have a big match later this week when they take on No. 2 Notre Dame. That match will be on the Big Ten Network.
  • No. 1 Nebraska opened the 2026 season with its annual Red-White Scrimmage in front of a crowd of 10,753 fans in Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Red team defeated the White team 3-1, though the Huskers mixed their teams and lineups around for each set.
  • Teraya Sigler and Virginia Adriano led all players with 11 kills each. Sigler added 10 digs and a block, while Adriano chipped in four blocks and five digs. Manaia Ogbechie recorded a match-high 13 blocks and had six kills. Not only was there an interesting unveiling of this year's addition to the team, but the attendance was absolutely crazy.
  • Fox Sports recently put together a listing of where every single FBS team ranks this preseason and the Nebraska Cornhuskers rank at No. 35. That seems like a fair ranking. Should NU get to 5-0, it will almost certainly be in the Top 25, but until then, it's on the outside looking in.
  • Former Nebraska Cornhuskers star Ceyair Wright was looking like he would make the Cincinnati Bengals roster this fall, but he decided he had an offer from Hollywood that he couldn't ignore. Wright left the team and is resuming an acting career that includes an appearance in the new Space Jam movie and 15 episodes of Grown-ish.
