Matt Rhule would be the first to admit that this offseason for the Nebraska football team was different than any other its seen. Tony White and Terrance Knighton stepping out the door before the first bowl game in almost a decade was just part of the weirdness.
Partly because of White and Knighton Rhule and the rest of the Huskers dealt with more transfer portal exits and entrances. And while the NU head coach has made it clear that he doesn’t want to build his team through the transfer portal he realized that he actually had a little fun with it this year.
The Nebraska football head coach appeared on Urban Meyer’s The Triple Option podcast to talk about a number of issues. One of the biggest ones was that he doesn’t believe the Huskers should be scheduling tough opponents. However, a topic he touched on that’s getting largely ignored is the fun he had looking at portal acquisitions this offseason.
Nebraska football coach enjoyed checking out transfer targets
"It was almost a little bit reinvigorating,” Rhule told Meyer. “In some ways I came in every day and I had a list of like 30 guys to watch. I just sat here and cranked it out like a scout watching guys ... I actually kind of enjoyed that process."
For anyone who thinks his fun checking out transfer players is going to change the way he handles recruiting, it appears there will be some changes based on the reality of the situation.
However, the Nebraska football head coach still wants to go through high school more than the portal. "I'd still like to be 65 percent, 70 percent high school. It's just got to be the right guys."
