It’s almost that time of year again. It’s almost time for the college baseball postseason. And when that time of year does arrive, it means that the sport will do things differently than any other sport at this level as they’ll divide up the postseason into regionals. That of course begs the question: How many NCAA regionals are there?

Back when college baseball first did this format, which has four teams in each regional that is a self contained double elimination tournament, there were just eight different regionals.

How many NCAA regionals are there?

However, the answer to how many NCAA regionals are there, involves quite a few more teams these days. There are now 16 different regionals, each with 4 teams for a grand total of 64 teams.

That’s an interesting number if for no other reason than it used to be the exact same number as the teams in the NCAA basketball tournament, before that even decided to expand by four.

Much like March Madness, these regionals take place all over the country, however, unlike in basketball, this opening round is awarded to 16 home reams. The first regional winners are the best 8 teams in the country and they will also host the super regional, should they get that far.

The other eight regionals are usually awarded to the rest of the best, but can also be weighted based on best stadiums, attendance numbers and that sort of thing.

Once the regionals are finished, the winner will go to a round of 16 that is the super regionals that is a best of three series, followed by the eight team College World Series.
