Just over a month after Hayes Miller decided he wanted to see what else was out there, it appears the former JUCO wide receiver has decided that Nebraska football is the best fit for him after all. In the process, one has to wonder if this isn’t the first rather direct piece of fallout from the House vs. NCAA settlement.
Miller entered the transfer portal on May 1, not long after the Huskers wrapped up their spring practice. He entered the portal with several other players who could have been very obvious roster casualties of the upcoming 105-man roster limit. However, when Judge Claudia Wilken officially signed off on the settlement, it offered a grandfather clause. That clause said that any player who was on the roster or would be on the roster this fall before the settlement went into effect had a place with their teams.
Hayes Miller leaves transfer portal, opting to rejoin Nebraska for the 2025 season
Wilken added that programs like Nebraska football had to let any player who left because of roster limits come back. Earlier this week, Miller officially came back, announcing on social media that he was exiting the transfer portal and staying in Lincoln.

Miller is certainly an interesting case study. He joined the Huskers last summer after working out at a camp designed specifically for post-grad and JUCO prospects. While he didn’t see much field time, he seemed to blend well with the rest of the roster and made the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll (Fall 2024), the Brook Berringer Citizenship Team (2025), and the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team (2025).
Now, he comes back as a preferred walk-on with rules around Nebraska football, and the rest of the college football world has definitely changed. It will be interesting to see if he can make his mark and get playing time for the Cornhuskers this season.
