If the AFCA gets its way, there will be a major shift to how the transfer portal works. Former Nebraska football defensive coordinator Craig Bohl, in his official capacity as president of the organization, is responsible for helping to push the potential rule change up the chain.

While the rule on its face, seems to have some pretty big support among college football coaches and media, there are still some hurdles it needs to clear. For now, Bohl and the AFCA will push the change to the Football Oversight Committee where the NCAA will really run with it.

While the former Nebraska football coach and current AFCA president can’t get the rule adopted all by himself, his organization certainly favors it. That rule would mean that there is now just one transfer portal window, rather than a winter and spring window. That window would be from January 2 to January 12.

Ex-Nebraska football coach key to pushing new transfer portal rule

The reason for the change is an obvious one. There have been more than a few coaches that have complained about trying to prep for bowl games, or even playoff games, while they’re also having to worry about what players might leave.

They’re also not thrilled they have to go out and replace those players while they’re getting ready for the big games. Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule went out and got several transfer players. He also saw several players leave while he was prepping for the Pinstripe Bowl. The first bowl for the program since 2016.

Needless to say, he’s in favor of this change to the transfer portal as it also means he won’t have to worry about the portal during spring practice. And at least in part, should this rule go through, he’ll have a former Nebraska football coach to thank for getting this change pushed through.
