While the Nebraska football team might be on the verge of adding several commits from sunny Florida, Matt Rhule and his coaching staff lost a battle for what is considered the best player in Arizona in Camren Hamiel.

On Wednesday afternoon, the 4-star cornerback officially announced his pledge to Texas A&M, ending a recruiting fight that saw more than a few Big Ten schools get involved. While it probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise that the Aggies won the fight, the timing has to sting a bit for the Huskers’ coaching staff.

Camren Hamiel picks Texas A&M over Nebraska, canceling upcoming Lincoln visit in recruiting surprise

Last month, Hamiel placed Texas A&M in his top four program list, joining the Nebraska football team, Oregon, and Penn State. Knowing that the competition is fierce, Elko and his staff reportedly hosted Hamiel this past weekend, prior to his official visit to College Station on June 20.

It appears that the unofficial visit was all he needed to be convinced that he didn’t need to take the official trip before pulling the trigger on a pledge. What’s most disappointing about the news is that it comes just two days before the corner was expected to take an official to Lincoln to really see what the Cornhuskers had to offer.

It seems for now, at least, that official visit, as well as one planned for Oregon on June 13 are officiall canceled.

It is worth pointing out that Hamiel himself hasn’t said for certain he won’t give the Nebraska football team a look. However it seems unlikely considering the timing. Why announce a commitment to another school just days before a trip, unless part of the reason you’ve made the announcement is because you don’t want to take that plane ride anymore.
