The Nebraska football team hasn’t made any changes to the staff just yet and head coach Matt Rhule isn’t planning on any yet.
Now that the Nebraska football season is over, there are two things most Husker fans are hoping happens in short order. The first is that NU goes out and gets a quarterback from the transfer portal who can lead the team back to a bowl in 2024.
The second thing most of Husker Nation is calling for is a shift in the coaching staff. There is a rather loud contingent that wants offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield to get moved off of the quarterback coach position, if he’s not going to get fired.
In that regard, Huskers head coach Matt Rhule threw a bit of cold water on both ideas. After talking about how much money it was going to take to bring in a new quarterback from the portal, Rhule made it clear that he’s not thinking about shifting his staff around, at least not at the moment.
“I’m not ready to talk about that yet,” Rhule said at his Wednesday press conference. “I’m not there yet.”
Interestingly enough, Rhule did point out that Satterfield was originally hired to be offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. He didn’t take over the quarterbacks coach job until Jake Peetz turned down the position to stay with the Los Angeles Rams.
Nebraska football not making changes just yet
Eventually, Rhule hired Bob Wager to coach the tight ends, but he was fired before the season started after a drunk driving incident. Josh Martin was hired after Wager and is the current tight ends coach.
Part of the reason why Rhule is reluctant to shift Satterfield off of quarterbacks coach is likely that it would mean firing Martin, or another assistant in order to make room. The Nebraska football team has played just one season under the current group and its leader isn’t ready to throw anyone out with the bath water just yet.
