New Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule was likely hoping to be further along in putting together his staff than he currently is at this point. For instance, it seems as if he had at least hoped he would have one more member on staff in the form of quarterbacks coach Jake Peetz.

Peetz was rumored almost from the beginning of Rhule’s reign to be someone who would eventually join the staff. However, there was talk that his acceptance of the quarterbacks coach job was contingent on Mickey Joseph joining the staff.

Now that it’s pretty clear that Mickey will not be a member of Rhule’s staff, neither will Peetz. It is not known if the former Nebraska football interim head coach not being a part of the staff is the reason the Rams assistant turned down the job.

Albert Breer reported that the Huskers will be looking for another quarterbacks coach on Saturday morning. “Rams offensive assistant Jake Peetz has decided to stay in the NFL after considering an offer to join Nebraska coach Matt Rhule’s staff,” Breer wrote on Twitter.

There is not much info on why the assistant chose to stay in the NFL. Though the Rams recently lost their offensive coordinator to Kentucky. It’s possible that Peetz is looking at a promotion to a much coveted NFL OC spot.

Nebraska Football Looking For QB Coach

One reason why fans were excited to see Peetz come to Lincoln was because he’s a former player who was a walk-on long snapper in 2005. He’s also got a relatively extensive coaching resume despite being fairly young.

Over the course of his career he’s worked under Nick Saban and Ed Orgeron, while also being an assistant for Matt Rhule at Carolina and this year with Zack McVay on the Los Angeles Rams.

Peetz turning down the job means that the Nebraska football team is still looking for three assistants. Two on offense and one on defense.
