Nebraska football fans puzzled by Carlon Jones decommitment statement
The Nebraska football team got a commitment on Tuesday night and lost a commitment within an hour and fans are confused on Carlon Jones’ comments.
Tuesday night was a bit of a roller coaster ride for Nebraska football fans. First they saw the commitment of offensive lineman Grant Brix. That briefly boosted the 2024 recruiting class to levels it hadn’t seen for a couple of years with most recruiting experts.
When I say briefly, I mean briefly. Within the following hour, the Huskers lost one of the top defensive line commits of the class in Carlon Jones. While the Texas prospect has been getting quite a bit of attention from big programs over the last few weeks, he’d stuck with Matt Rhule and company … until last night.
Jones made an announcement that he’d opened up his recruiting. It’s worth noting that he did so, just about 10 days before he’s scheduled to take an official visit to Ohio State. It was the wording of his announcement that had some Husker fans a little confused and wondering if there was more to the story.
“Well …” Jones wrote on social media. “God has changed my pathway. I appreciate all the love the coaches have shown me. Thank y’all for believing in me. I really wanted to be apart of the change in the program, but unfortunately that couldn’t happen. I am announcing my decommitment from the university of Nebraska. Thank y’all for everything but I believe god does everything for a reason so I’m goin to trust in him. My recruitment is now open.”
Nebraska football fans confused by Carlon Jones statement
Some Husker fans zeroed in on the comment about what “couldn’t happen.” They also saw the talk about it all being God’s plan and believe that perhaps his decommitment wasn’t entirely up to him.
One fan noted that with the announcement that Ty Robinson will be back for 2024, there might not be room on the Nebraska football defensive line for Carlon Jones.
That particular change would certainly be an interesting one. Especially if Ohio State is able to find room for the 3-star prospect in their class.
This also wouldn’t be the first time that the Nebraska football team has lost a recruit while the talk was there wasn’t room in the class. Omaha Central offensive lineman Caleb Pyfrom chose Illinois over the Huskers this summer and it was widely believed that commitment came because Nebraska made it clear they wouldn’t be taking him.
