Nebraska football should keep an eye on Texas Tech’s Tyler Shough for an upgrade in Year 2 under Coach Rhule once the portal opens in December.

With just one game left in the 2023 regular season, it’s almost time for the Nebraska football team to turn its attention to building for Year 2 of the Matt Rhule regime. At the top of the list of things the Huskers badly need if they want to improve on the small step forward this year was, is a new quarterback out of the transfer portal.

The portal doesn’t open for another few weeks and there are likely going to be several candidates. However, one prospect announced on Sunday that he’ll be looking for a new school when the time to transfer does come.

It turns out that Texas Tech signal-caller Tyler Shaugh might just be a perfect fit for the Nebraska football team. And thanks to some bumps in the road in Lubboch, he might be the kind fo player that the Cornhuskers would be able to land.

Shough began his career with the Oregon Ducks before transferring to Texas Tech and playing for the Red Raiders the last three seasons. While with the Big 12 school, he suffered a number of injuries including a fractured fibula suffered during the fourth game this season vs. West Virginia.

Before seeing his season end prematurely, Shough threw for 746 yards, 7 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. In his second game of the year he also carried the ball 23 times for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Nebraska football might be perfect fit for Tyler Shough

Shough obviously has some warts that might make Cornhuskers fans a little gun shy. Four of his intereptions in his shortened 2023 campaign came in one game, against his former mates on the Oregon Ducks.

Turnovers have been an issue for the Nebraska football team and fans are going to be nervous about bringing in someone they see as similar to Jeff Sims.

On the other hand, the chance that there will be a perfectly polished transfer portal quarterback out there willing to come to Nebraska is not high.

There is also the added bonus that Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire and Rhule are tight. The Huskers could get some scouting on the strengths and weaknesses of Shough. Likewise, Nebraska football could get a boost in the form of a recommendation from McGuire.

Tyler Shough is a name for Nebraska football faithful to keep a close eye on come December.
