While Nebraska football’s quarterback situation is looking shakier than we’d like, one former Husker had a great first start of the season.

When Logan Smothers decided he was leaving the Nebraska football program, there were some people who were a bit nervous about the situation. Even head coach Matt Rhule made it clear Smothers would be welcomed back if he decided not to transfer. Granted, they were mostly nervous because of depth, rather than concern over losing a starting level quarterback. Instead, Smothers transferred to Jacksonville State for their first season at the FBS level. So far, so good for both the quarterback and the team.

Smothers got the start for the Gamecocks in their second game of the year after being the backup in their season opener. The former Nebraska football player ended up looking pretty darn good, even with the caveat that it was against East Tennessee State.

In the 49-3 win, Smothers showed off his ability to hurt his opponent both with his arm and his legs.

The former Nebraska football quarterback was efficient, completing 13-of-17 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. He also carried the ball 14 times for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Those 14 rushes were the most on the team.

Obviously, if Logan Smothers can’t perform well against the likes of East Tennessee State, that would be a problem. Someone who was taking snaps for a Power 5 program in 2022 should absolutely have success against this level of opponent.

But, after watching Nebraska football’s newly anointed quarterback throw three really ugly interceptions in a game they lost by three points, it’s a bit painful to see someone who transferred out be that efficient.
