Nebraska football tight end Arik Gilbert had been waiting on news of his waiver, now things have only gotten worse as criminal charges are involved.
It turns out that sitting around and waiting for the NCAA to rule on Arik Gilbert’s waiver might have been the “fun” part of this whole process for the Nebraska football program.
On Tuesday morning, things took a turn towards the very dark side when a report surfaced that the transfer tight end had been arrested and charged with burglary. Gilbert was taken into custody Tuesday morning in Lancaster County, according to police records.
According to The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman, the player was “arrested without incident” SJ’s Liquor and Vape Shop in Lincoln. He was reportedly arrested with just over $1,600 in vape products, Delta 8, cigars and lighters.
The latest wrinkle is undoubtedly one no one around Nebraska football saw coming. At the absolute worst, the expectations were the NCAA would finally rule and rule that Gilbert wouldn’t be able to play this year.
Now the transfer tight end, who came over from Georgia and from LSU before that, is in legal trouble.
While it’s unlikely this particular charge would impact the NCAA’s decision on whether he’ll be eligible, there are bigger issues to worry about. Less than a month ago, Nebraska football tight ends coach Bob Wager was cited for driving under the influence. Once that charge became public, the former Texas high school head coach quickly stepped down.

The tight end’s arrest also continues a bit of a troubling trend with Nebraska football and running afoul of the law. Former interim head coach Mickey Joseph, defensive back Myles Farmer, and Wager and Gilbert have all faced criminal charges over the last year.
As of now, no one in the Nebraska football program has issued an official statement.
