Carter Nelson took a trip to Georgia over the weekend and there are more than a few whispers that Nebraska football is being shoved off the top of his list.

You can hardly blame Nebraska football fans for being a little nervous this morning. The Georgia Bulldogs are coming for another of the Huskers’ top prospects. Who wouldn’t be nervous?

Carter Nelson is taking a trip to see Kirby Smart and company and this isn’t like some of the other trips he’s taken that were listed as “unofficial visits.” This weekend he’s on one of his five official visits. That should make Husker fans nervous.

It doesn’t appear it’s time to panic just yet. According to the top recruiting sites, the Cornhuskers are still at the top of the Ainsworth native’s list of schools. He’s still considered a heavy lean, with On3 saying he’s got a 40 percent chance of landing in Lincoln compared to just 10 percent in Athens.

But that was also before his official visit. Things could change when Smart has three days to plant a bug in the ear of the state of Nebraska’s top 2024 prospect. Husker fans have certainly been here before.

Cornhuskers message boards and social media were lit up with talk about Nelson possibly being a missed opportunity. Most seemed to feel as though he’d already be sewn up by Matt Rhule and company if the Huskers were really the front runners.

Of course, it’s worth pointing out that when you’re a kid from Ainsworth, Nebraska, getting to travel all over the country, including to one of the biggest and best programs in college football is going to have an appeal on a sightseeing basis alone.

Where Carter Nelson is going to go to school is going to be much more about where he feels most comfortable. And that’s why the Nebraska football program is still very much in the pole position.
