As Nebraska football recruiting rolls on for both the 2024 class and those beyond, the Huskers are hosting a pair of New York prospects next week that could absolutely be the building blocks of the Matt Rhule era. One of the most interesting aspects to the visit by the New Yorkers is that historically, it’s not an area that Nebraska football recruiting has paid much attention. However, the Northeast is clearly getting a bit more attention from Rhule and company.

Preston Carey and Joseph Filardi’s unofficial visits are also attractive because neither prospect has an offer from the Huskers just yet. That’s not stopping the two youngsters from coming to see what Lincoln offers, and it certainly wouldn’t be surprising to see them leave town with officials in their back pockets.

Carey announced he was Nebraska bound earlier this month, pinpointing April 6 as the day he’ll be meeting with Husker coaches. There’s little doubt why Nebraska football recruiting is giving the 2026 defensive lineman a look considering what he’s already done in his freshman season. That included helping his St. Anthony’s school in East Northport, New York to a state title in their class.

While not yet sporting an official offer from the Cornhuskers, he does have those offers from 13 different schools already, including Penn State, Rutgers, Michigan, Georgia, and LSU, among others.  According to On3, the Scarlet Knights appear to be the front runners despite offers from bigger and traditionally better schools.

While Nebraska football recruiting interests have zeroed in on Stone Saunders for its 2025 quarterback prospect, there could certainly be room for more in the form of Joseph Filardi if he can impress the coaches during his April 6 visit and in his junior season.

Filardi hasn’t yet gotten the attention of the schools that are offering Carey but anyone following recruiting knows that could change quickly. Especially if he echos the numbers he had in 2022 when he threw for 2,028 yards and 32 touchdowns to just eight interceptions while also running for over 600 yards.

One thing is certain for Nebraska football recruiting. Matt Rhule and company aren’t missing any opportunities to do some heavy lifting during spring practice.
